IMX378 Camera for Raspberry Pi 5: Preflight Guide

IMX378 HQ camera board with mounted lens

Chinneo |

The current IMX378 HQ Series camera is listed as a 12.3MP module for Raspberry Pi 5 projects. Resolution is useful only if the complete camera path works: the right cable, the intended lens, software that recognizes the module, and storage or processing suited to the images you want to capture.

Start at the Pi 5 connector

Raspberry Pi's camera documentation identifies the Pi 5's camera/display port as a smaller 22-pin connector. That describes the host board. It does not tell you which connector is on this IMX378 module or which cable ships with Chinneo's HQ Series option. Verify both ends and the contact orientation before powering the system. The official documentation also explains that the Pi 5 has two CAM/DISP connectors; choosing a port is only one part of software setup.

Define the image you actually need

Write down the target: still photography, time-lapse, inspection, or another application. Decide the subject distance and required detail. The product gallery shows several lens appearances, but the live Shopify product currently has only one HQ Series variant. Do not infer that every pictured lens is in the box. Confirm the selected lens, mount, field of view, and any adapter before treating this as a complete kit.

Next, confirm that your Raspberry Pi OS and camera software can identify and use this specific third-party module. A sensor model appearing in an official camera list is not proof that every board built around that sensor has identical wiring, tuning, or software support. If your application depends on a particular video mode or frame rate, ask for the mode supported by the exact module-and-host combination; the 12.3MP sensor label alone does not answer that question.

A useful purchase checklist

  • Exact Pi 5 model and OS/camera-stack version.
  • Camera-side and host-side connector details, cable length, and orientation.
  • Lens, mount, and accessories actually included with HQ Series.
  • Still-image or video mode required by the application.
  • Space for the board and lens inside the enclosure.

Review the IMX378 HQ Series product against that checklist before ordering. A verified connection plan is more useful than a generic “plug and play” promise.
